Saturday night
In general, last night was a quite night for work. The afternoon mist seemed to take the edge off proceedings around town. If folk didn't get along to see David Bowie at the Entertainment Centre or the Miss Drag King at the Metro, then I guess they stayed home and watched Blokesworld.
Not surprisingly, there was heightened activity out of South Sydney, via the radio,
5.15pm - Rocks being thrown Botany & Regent Sts, Waterloo : Avoid if possible
This activity in the shopping precinct of Redfern, on a major thoroughfare, indicates an emboldened attitude from the kids. Usually they operate around Pitt and Wellington, launching rocks from behind bushes, after dark.
Around 1am, then about an 30 mins later, broadcasts come for the Matraville area,
Avoid Beauchamp Rd & Anzac Parade Marouba. Youths throwing rocks at cars.
Usually that district leaves us alone, targeting buses as their preferred victims to terrorize. If the La Perouse Kooris are still hyped over the death of TJ and resulting troubles, then maybe the buses banned them. They already have security riding shotgun, Saturday nights. If the kids can't get back to Lapa, then they may well take the opportunity to hone up their rock throwing skills.
Around the same time, I spot a Polair chopper conducting a systematic search of the parks and open spaces of Elizabeth Bay, Ruchcutters Bay and White City. I drove past Rushcutters Bay Park when the overhead chopper lit it up. The beams footprint covered the whole park with brilliant light, in one pass. Wonder if this patrol operation will become a regular thing.
Finally, I have to report passing the Sheaf Hotel, Double Bay, at closing around 2am. There's a police presence there, monitoring the rowdy and dispersing crowd. Three patrol cars, half-dozen officers and half-dozen security, line the gutter. They are preventing the idiots spilling onto New South Head Road, in the fight for cabs. Broken glass litters the road. Arrogance is the operative word here. I elect to kill my Vacant light and drive on by. Goodnight.
