Huh..?
A quick one before I rush off to work. Last night waiting on a rank at the World Energy Congress Convention, a hire car driver told me this unbelievable piece of news,
When international Qantas flights arrive and taxi to the terminal, the captain informs passengers that not only are taxis waiting for them but also they do not expect tips. To do so would cause Sydney cabbies much embarrassment !
Can any travellers confirm this...?

I can confirm the "xxx don't expect tips" comments. Where xxx is anything from cabs to waiters.
It's mainly aimed at the US populace which assumes a tip is par for the course.

Duncan, if it's aimed at Americans, then that really, really sucks. If there is one thing Americans are known for is being damn generous tippers, if not the most generous.

I'm finding this hard to believe. Surely it's not a general Qantas directive, but then why would individual pilots take it upon themselves to make such an outrageous statement.

I think it is not a directive... but I know I have heard it coming into Sydney from LAX.
Generous tipping is expected in the US to supplement lower base wages for service-type jobs... not really the case here.
