Friday night chicks
As is my wont, I’ve just spent Friday night on the couch. My one and only night off these days. As such it’s devoted to watching ABC TV, starting with the 7pm News. Straight off it hit a high note with news of Labor’s blood-letting over the leadership issue. For a party which offered itself as the compassionate alternative last election, they certainly don’t practice what they preach. How sweet it all is...
Next up, I was so not looking forward to Strictly Dancing, with that smarmy little tosser, whatisname pouncing up front, injecting cheap political jibes at every opportunity - it's a dancing show, dickwit ! McDermott, that’s him.
However last night being the grand final, the dancing was excellent. Even better, I ducked out for a pizza during the embarrassing ‘street dancing’ segment and fortunately missed that bit. The highlight of the one hour special was the blonde couple, schoolkids of only 17 years, who were absolutely dynamic. I’m a hard man to impress, but they were electrifying.
The Brief, a BBC murder courtroom series starring that twit Jeremy someone, was also excellent. He was a frustrating idiot in his previous series as an offbeat sleuth, but in The Brief he really shines. A much more accessible character and believable role. Even better, I love his 'love interest' character, some Irish journalist chick.
The BBC provides endless Friday night murder mysteries here which puts the ABC to shame. The last half-decent ABC murder series I saw was Wildside. Which simply demonstrates how little television I watch.
Following this was the final episode of ABC’s comedy panel, The Glasshouse. When it first started I really liked it. Then half-way into the series, during the election run-up, I loathed it. Now over the last month, I’ve got right back into it. Last week’s episode with guests Molly Meldrum and Andrew Denton was about as funny as it gets.
And last night’s final was pretty good too, especially given Shelly Horton appeared as a guest. Shelly not only produced my Mondo Thingo gig, but is also blessed with beautiful breasts. Huh, you say ? Why not I say ! She wore them proud and out there in a sensational blue dress. Good luck to her, she’s very funny and a real star. Speaking of which, that regular Glasshouse girl, Corrine really turns me on. Is it just me, or do others find her raucous and infectious laughter sexually attractive. It’s probably just me....
In the last month or so I’ve been snoozing from the Late News through unto Rage, ABC’s all night music video program. Once, the start of this show was a signal to get up and do something else. Like wash-up or clean my room. However lately I’ve been taken in by a couple of compelling artists who have me waiting around till well after midnight. In particular, gorgeous and talented Gwen Stephanie.
I’ve never seen nor heard Stephanie before, but I’ve been seduced by her new single, What are you waiting for ?. You honey ! Except I have this strong perception she’s gay. Recently in the cab, I asked a couple of young lipstick lesbians about her, as they seemed her type. One thought she was bi-sexual and the other thought she was married to the drummer. No matter, Stephanie's song and video is simply sensational, which I must download into my phone to play at work.
Another act which has piqued my interest is the band, Sons and Daughters. They currently have a rollicking, hard-arsed rock tune, with a video involving a bar-room brawl. I suspect they're Scottish. Their bass player is a beguiling yet blank chick - if that’s possible - with a wonderfully whimsical, subtle demeanor. Additionally they have another equalling interesting chick on keyboards, belting out backing vocals. All round a great tune and video.
My next Friday night chick is about 50, and set in the 1950s, who's just lovely. She is the quintessential American mother from Happy Days. The attractive Tupperware lady if you like. She plays piano and sings in a sweet, maternal manner supporting a black rapper, Dizzy Rascal. In miniature, he performs atop her piano a funny and gentle rap song, with a cast of marionettes from the ‘hood’.
Finally, if I’m lucky, Rage might play the new Bjork single. As usual she's dressed in the weirdest outfit and located in an Icelandic landscape. I never really cared for Bjork, nor understood her. Until a couple of years ago when I watched a two hour retrospective of her hits on cable. Now I love her work and think she’s one of the most innovative and talented artists around. Visually at least. Not sure if her music stands up alone, without her unique video productions. Though I suspect it does due to her amazing voice and arrangements.
Anyway, that’s Friday night on the couch with the girls. As Dizzy Rascal and mum sing, ‘Everybody dreams, something and something and something, you’ve got to have a dream come true’.

hah ... I was on a very similar couch ... just not for as long.
I loved the young blonde things on Stictly Dancing. Their jive was superb. But ... the winners were not only superb but elegant, sexy, electrifying ... all those adjectives! And I agree about McDermott ... what a mismatch. Actually the entire setup is incongruous ... Lex Marinos and Angela Gilltrap serve no purpose whatsoever ... nothing NOTHING any of them says is funny ... just excruciatingly embarrassing ... but the dancing is great.
The Brief I have been enjoying tremendously. I like this sort of show. Andrew Davies (I think) is very likeable ... and the Scottish lass is keen ... she was in something ... mmm that cop show from Edinburgh with that bloke from Four Weddings and a Funeral ... can't remember ...
As soon as The Glasshouse came on I turned off ...

Gwen Stefani. Used to be in a band called No Doubt. Pretty sure she's straight, she was going out with one of the guys in No Doubt. Still never can tell.
With you on Paul McDermott - talentless and nasty.

Gwen Stefani is/was married (I've got a feeling she's going through a divorce right now) to Gavin Rossdale from a little known Brit rockband called Bush.

OK, I have to ask - was the use of "marionettes" soon after talking about the Happy Days mum (Marion Cunningham) on purpose? :-)

Mick, No, but well spotted ! It was purely a factual correction done on re-checking. In the original draft I used the term, 'puppets'.
Julie, in my book the kids were the real winners given they were amateurs and the winners professional. And Scottish, not Irish...it was late.
Thanks for the Gwen update, Kim and Simon. Regarding McDermott, a mate of mine had him in the cab years ago, who reckoned he was up himself then.

Gwen Stefani is still with No Doubt and is still married to the guy (if Woman's Day haven't mentioned a break-up it hasn't happened)who is the lead singer of a band called Bush (who I think are American, but who knows and more importantly, who cares). Having said that I am about as hip as somebody who is totally not hip so what would I know about the world of popular music.
