My regular shift report has been sidetracked by an article in today's Sydney Morning Herald about speeding fines in the Cross City Tunnel. Previously I've had a full spray on the matter and so left a final comment.
Hopefully there will be enough reader feedback at the Herald, a la the Lane Cove Tunnel fines, for the Govt. to have a change of heart. One can only hope...

Government has a "heart"?
I'll notify the media immediately!

"Road safety experts say drivers are more likely to speed on roads that are not congested."
Wow. How'd they work that out........

One of the difficulties about taxi driving in Victorian country towns is that ALL side roads are 50 KMH whether signposted or not.
You can leave a 60 KMH road turn into a shortcut to cut out the CBD and it's an unsignposted 50 area. I got speed camera booked for 55KMH twice within half an hour on the same day. It certainly wakes you up with a jolt and makes you concentrate.

The Cross City Tunnel, like the Lane Cove Tunnel has plenty of warning when the speed limit has been reduced. In addition to the multiple illuminated variable speed limit signs, there are flashing lights before the tunnel that warn you of the reduced limit.
I personally think the speed limits are too slow. I travelled through the M5 East one night at 3am with the speed limit reduced to 40 - a long, slow drive when there is no traffic around you - and there was not a sign of any roadworks or road workers.
But still, I stuck to the limit because it's not worth my job to stick to my principles.

Where is the speed camera in the Cross City Tunnel? Is it after the Airport turn-off when travwelling east?

I think we should reduce the speed limit for all vehicles to 15kmh in all areas. That way everyone will be safe.
