Keepers
Last night I carried a middle-aged woman home to Maroubra beach. A lifetime resident she claimed the notorious Bra Boys are misunderstood and misrepresented.
“They’re really lovely guys,” she stated, “just like plenty of local kids hanging around the beach. They have that larconic Aussie humour with some of the best jokes. Plus they're right into family stuff and often take their mothers and grannies out to breakfast at the beach cafes.”
We got talking about their movie, The Bra Boys and she told how the principal Bra Boys are currently in Hollywood promoting the US release of the movie. This gave me a chance to query a rumour I’d heard that the whole movie schtick is about promoting their line of clothing, named after their celebrated slogan, MY BROTHERS KEEPER.
“I don’t know about that,” she said. “But a couple of my girlfriends are mothers of Bra Boys. They’ve been thinking about creating their own line of clothing - MY SONS KEEPER, 'cause the boys won’t leave home!” Now that’s funny.

Close, Alto. The beach shown is Bronte, three beaches north of Maroubra. An MBK decal there would most likely be seen as a provocative act given the Bra Boy's fierce localism.
