Talent

This week a radio broadcaster quoted Bob Dylan: “A man is successful when he gets up in the morning and does exactly what he wants to do.” Or something to that effect.

At the time I thought this ironic as an old friend knew Dylan, due to her then husband being one of Dylan’s entertainment attorneys. Americans, apparently, have attorneys rather than lawyers. Anyway, she told of attending a meeting between the two in a roadside diner to lockdown a tour, outlined on the back of a menu.

Upon signing the draft Dylan held onto the attorney’s pen and asked if he could keep it. Of course the request was granted. When he rose and leant over to kiss my friend goodbye, his jacket fell open to reveal an inside pocket bulging with pens. Back then, she claimed, Dylan was living in a trailer with Doberman dogs. Strange success.

All this got me thinking about creativity, how the process works for artists and how it gels with regular life. Or not. Last month I touched on this, amongst a host of music related subjects with one of Australia’s most talented, singer-songwriters...

New Tunes

Occasionally on a quiet City rank I wander over to The Basement doorway to check on who’s appearing. Last night it was Missy Higgins performing her new album for a live broadcast.

Later a passenger revealed the gig was staged by BigPond and streamed to the web and mobile phones, Australia's first online/mobile concert. Hail the new media.

My passenger worked for Nova FM yet, surprisingly, was unaware of a new Aussie artist set to follow Missy Higgins as the next big thing. This is Kate Miller-Heidke, a singer-songwriter who has appeared on ABC TV's Rage in the last few weeks with her first single, Words.

She’s a trained operatic singer who has made the switch to ‘loopy-pop’, for want of a better descriptor. Check out her delicious send-up of Australian Idol.

IZ

Today I'd like to share something with you...don't you hate it when people say 'share this with you' ? It's like okay, does that mean I've got to give it back later...?

Anyway, in a recent post I mentioned a gorgeous tune, Over the Rainbow by the late, great Israel 'IZ' Kamakawiwo'Ole. Thanks to YouTube I've found a video of the song. I know millions of folks already know of IZ, but if you don't, then you may enjoy this.

Have a great weekend.

Noise-off

I worked a hip-hop gig Sunday night at the Hordern Pavilion. Featured were two artists called DJ Shadow/Mos Def,

Two veritable hip-hop superstars from opposite sides of the US. Brooklyn's Mos Def is an eloquent MC. Californian DJ Shadow remains about the most musically eloquent DJ out there.

Judging from the full house there’s a healthy following for hip hop. The crowd was pretty cool with a large cross-section of punters from across Sydney. Other drivers told of fares from all over including the south-west and north shore.

I enjoy the hip hop shown Friday evenings on ABC TV's Rage. Hip hop is a social protest and commentary genre which in my book gives it legitimacy. Unlike vicious gansta rap and storm-trooper metal. With that it's 'noise-off', morons !

In the past Rage used to air this crap well after 3 am but increasingly it's appearing much earlier in the program. Why ? What cultural relevance has gansta rap and death metal with Australian audiences ? Zilch.

In giving prominence to issues like sexism, racism, homophobia, violence, crass materialism etc, I wonder what statement the ABC Yoooth Network is making ? Surely it's not a statement of simple rebellion. Or am I’m missing something deep and significant with Rage's programming of gangsta/nazi noise ?

Music Bits

Friday is music-video night for me as I forget about the hack and check out ABC TV's Rage for the latest tunes.

After quizzing many passengers I've finally located a great music-video on high rotation last month. It's called Today by Junkie XL featuring hilarious hairstyles and a sexy tune.

Another amazing video currently showing is God Lead Your Soul by The Sleepy Jackson. Not only a lush video but a fantastic tune from a really talented Perth outfit.

Eskimo Joe is another hot Aussie band from Perth. Their latest single Black Fingernails, Red Wine is a ripper but sorry, can't supply a taste. Also worth a mention is Perth band End of Fashion, another promising indie rock outfit also receiving airplay on Rage. Must be something in the water over there.

For a flashback check out Tim Blair's gruesome images of some Aussie rock legends.

Smashed

Friday is my music video night on Rage. Not because I’m a music nut but purely because it’s on late and ABC TV is my choice of accompaniment as I wade thru the weekly backlog of unread news inserts - Media, IT, Motor, that sort of stuff.

First though I have to mute the insufferable Will Anderson and his tired old routine of political sniping. Hey Will, my advice to you mate is, start_drinking. Heavily.

Drinking. For the last few weeks on Rage they’ve run an incredible clip which captivates me as soon as I hear it. So mesmerising is the music and storyline I never seem to catch the artist’s name or song title.

It opens in the early evening. A young caucasian woman going home from work - it may be New York - stops at a liquor store. She’s middle class I guess and dressed as a regular looking young professional. Kind of pretty, made-up face yet nothing special.

Anyway, she proceeds to purchase two carry-bags of hard liquor and heads home to her walk-up apartment. Immediately upon entering she cracks open a can of beer, considers it briefly and downs it. Next she goes to the lounge room, sits down and flicks the top off a large bottle of vodka, or gin and starts chugaluging it. She’s on a mission.

Over the top of this a guy croons a slow groove ballad, hypnotic and ethereal with the chorus line, ‘I’ve been thinking about you baby..’.

Soon she’s on to her second bottle whilst slowly shedding items of clothing around the apartment. Next she’s sitting on the toilet chuggaluging another bottle of clear liquor before watching some television through bleary eyes, cradling a large cocktail glass. Just for a change I guess.

Staggering back to the kitchen wearing only briefs and a top, she’s greeted by a table bearing four large empty bottles. Slumping precariously onto a chair she struggles to comprehend it all, after bingeing through the lot with a calculated vengeance. Lost love is the theme with her misery now complete.

The music’s beautifully paced against the woman’s slow alcoholic destruction. The camera elicits a certain voyeuristic fascination, contrasting the apartment’s softly lit comforts with her fearless and breathtaking indulgence.

By now she’s absolutely shit-faced, barely conscious. Rising from the kitchen chair, she dresses and inexplicably goes back out into the night ! Stumbles across the road, staggers down the sidewalk, brushes off an accosting sleazebag before entering a dimly-lit park.

There she finds a bench and gingerly lays down on her back, staring off into the night sky with the stupid grin of a smashed drunk. Mission accomplished. The clip segues to her tumbling endlessly down a circular staircase with no bottom, then fades to black with Barber’s strings overlaid, or something similarly funereal.

It’s a beautifully balanced piece, with the protagonist’s role convincingly played by a professional who’s obviously done some serious character preparation on binge drinking. Scary yet enthralling.

So, I’m wondering if anyone knows this clip and can tell me who’s it by...

UPDATE : Doh ! Googling for Rage unearthed the tune. It's called Live With Me, Massive Attack's latest single. Full video or interruptus version.

UPDATE 2 : Reader Herman finds the actress, 'I wasn't acting, I was really drunk'.

Audio Stuff

From Wax Audio comes a concept called Mediacracy. This is the juxtaposing of sound bites from media sources with the aim, that forces the listener to confront the bias, contradiction and sensationalism inherent in their daily intake of media information.

Whilst I'm uncertain that is achieved, the exercise makes for some great examples of 'mashing'. In particular the mashed track of President Bush's words with the John Lennon tune, Imagine. And for a good laugh check out the Ray Hadley and Alan Jones obscenities bloopers mashed into a hilarious track.

Speaking of celebrity obscenities how about a blooper tape of Today Tonight's Namoi Robson. Available courtesy of ABC's JJJ FM. While you're there how about a great 30 year retrospective of 2JJ. Ahh, the memories. And whatever happened to my favourite 2JJ DJ George 'Groover' Wayne ? He was like an old friend through years of countless road trips. Sounds like he no more.

Heard of viral advertising ? It's an email campaign done purely by word of mouth being pioneered by Carlton draught beer. Pretty cool stuff.

Exploitation..?

It's so sad, our Kylie's got cancer. Thereby sending the media into a predictable feeding frenzy. Leading to the Victorian Govt issuing a fatwa against intrusive media coverage.

Question - if perchance her album, concert and lingerie sales increase as a result of the media exposure from this terrible disease, can it thus be claimed Kylie has shamelessly exploited her affliction ?

For that matter, has Belinda Emmet, Oliva Newton-John or Delta Goodrem exploited their cancers ?

If you believe so, please feel free to explain how, using the current media furore enveloping Kylie as a reference point....

UPDATE : Tim Blair reports some idiot New York DJ made a sick comment on Kylie's condition. The punters aren't happy.

Is it just me ?

Late in the evening last night, I picked up a woman around 50 years old from the Basement nightclub. She was ‘appalled’ at having to stand for two hours to see Madeleine Peyroux, touted as a Billie Holiday. And to add insult to injury, Peyroux kept the punters waiting for over an hour past the scheduled start time. I couldn't help but sarcastically quip, ‘What a star !’.

Just writing ‘50 years old’ reminds me whilst I’m in the same boat, I can’t really relate to the years my passengers face betrayed. Strangely enough. I discussed this with a 57 year old passenger over the weekend. He insisted he still harboured many of the same desires and interests as those he had in his twenties. Much to the embarrassment of his 28 year old son.

Whilst I can partially relate to this, I can’t understand how one can retain the same musical tastes, for example. With any degree of fervour other than pure sentiment. Regarding this I wonder, is it just me...

Cookin' with Kasey

Image923Yesterday saw the annual Homebake music festival in The Domain, central Sydney. Amongst many fine Aussie artists performing was the cross-over queen, Kasey Chambers. Primarily a country and western singer, Casey's music is also considered middle of the road rock/pop.

I used to think it was just me, but for all her talent Kasey really annoys a lot of people. And it's to do with the fact she sings like a baby. Or more to the point, she seems to sing from the back of her nose. As if she's wearing braces. Or maybe it's the stud in her mouth - or is it the chin ? Whatever...

A female passenger from the concert vented her frustration, 'Yes she was fantastic, but for God's sake, she's a grown woman with a baby and husband ! Sure, I've got her CDs, but I can only listen to them in small doses.' An early hit for Kasey was, Not pretty enough. A song which received so much airplay it became annoying in my cab. Women especially would request I turn it off.

Later in the evening I carried a woman from Homebake who had marketed Kasey in the early days for EMI. When I put this vocal peculiarity to her, she reluctantly agreed, 'Yes, she tends to polarise people with her voice. But she talks like that.'

Shortly thereafter Kasey was interviewed on ABC radio's Saturday Night Country. Whilst she does talk with a voice which sounds affected, I don't think it is. It sounds strangely natural.

Anyway have a listen, (about a third of the way in) and judge for yourself. Here she chats to the host and plays some beautiful tunes from her new album, Wayward Angel. Simply sensational, especially the title track plus her new single, Pony. Check out the baritone guitar. We're going to be hearing a lot of this song. Hopefully not too much.
