GYB

In Sydney’s niche world of creative, non-fiction, narrative blogging, there’s a new kid on the block, Graveyard Barista. He reports on the unique characters in his all-night downtown café.

Where I pride myself in the ability to fashion stories from encounters lasting a few minutes, GYB does the same thing in a matter of seconds. He is that good a writer,

Working in the service industry means you only interact with each of your customers for a few seconds each day....Most people breeze in, are nice enough, and breeze out again. I notice the small things in my customers; it’s all first impressions.

Even more galling, this bastard barista is not yet half my age. But that’s Gen Y for you, no respect.

Anyhow, for your daily fix of tales from Sydney’s netherworld check out GYB. You won’t be disappointed to add him to your Favourites.

Disclosure: GYB is one of my regular baristas who may, or may not, give me preferential service during peak periods. Just so you know.

Milblog

Today I'm outta here and hence no news from the cab front. However on an entirely different front is Ben, an army officer who is blogging from Iraq under The Iraqi Letters,

Al Mathanna is the first province in Iraq to be handed back over to Iraqi control - Australian forces just maintain regular liason and a high state of readiness to react to any major situations Iraqi forces cannot handle.

Ben is the first Aussie milblogger I've heard of. Check out The Iraqi Letters for an Aussie soldier's perspective of serving in Iraq. Ben includes some neat images.

Bitch-slap

A rare, perverse pleasure from reading blogs occurs when a journalist or blogger takes a ridiculous position on an issue. Then, rather than simply admit his/her error, proceeds to dig a deeper hole in their credibility. Hence the resultant bitch-slapping...

Blog Facts

The Pew Research Centre has released it's latest survey on bloggers. Whilst by no means a definitive survey of blogging-the survey was conducted within America-PRC surveys may be the best available on blogging.

I've listed specific findings which apply to my own experience, to give an idea where I sit in the blogging pecking order...

Blog Wars

After lagging behind the eightball News Ltd has recently smartened-up their online site. And as with Fairfax, they've introduced a suite of blogs to their website.

Under the label Blog Cabin News houses twenty-three blogs, whilst Fairfax's Blog Central has twenty-six blogs. Actually News Ltd has another hundred or so blogs scattered around a site which lacks optimum blog access. Equally, Fairfax needs to give more visibility to their home page blogs link.

One of Fairfax's best blogs is Jack Marx's The Daily Truth. Ever wanted to respond to News Ltd's Piers Akerman or Andrew Bolt ? Of course you have and now you can.

Otherwise I'm unsure if simply running a news item with a comment facility qualifies as a blog. Still it's good to see the MSM adopting blogs, the so-called citizens journalism.

Welcome to Adrian Neylan's blog of Sydney taxi stories.
